Pé da Cruz Church

The church of “Pé da Cruz” is located in the old outskirts of Alcaçarias from the time of the Arab occupation.

Although the façade presents 1669 as the year of its construction, there are traces that point to its construction on the foundations of a Gothic temple.
Founded by Manuel Raposo de Brito in 1488, it is believed to have been built next to a hospital called Santa Vera Cruz.

The current façade has a triangular pediment flanked by two pinnacles and a “Arms Stone” in the center. The Church has a single nave with a chancel covered in blue, yellow and white tiles with the “maçaroca” motif. There are six 17th-century canvases depicting the Steps of the Way of the Cross. It has baroque carvings decorating the crossing arch and a wrought iron web with floral motifs flanked by two peacocks.
